SLT Minutes September 2017

  • Chair: Liz Simmons

  • Secretary/Time Keeper: Tiffany Koo

  • SLT Stipend Vote

    • Traditionally, money has been sent to the school (as opposed to having a Treasurer log individual hours and distribute funds to each SLT member)

    • Vote results: 9 unanimous YES votes to continue on with tradition

  • Think about properly representing all of our constituencies

    • Currently, there are 3 parents represented, but no middle school (M.S.) representative (perhaps there should be 1 staff member and 1 parent representing the M.S.)

    • Need to check if this is OK according to the By-Laws

      • Can we amend or create new By-Laws?

    • Positions should be designated specifically (e.g. CBO’s)

  • Future meeting dates:

    • OCT. 13

    • NOV. 10

    • DEC. 1

    • JAN. 19

    • FEB. 9

    • MARCH 16

    • APR. 20

    • MAY 18

    • JUNE 1- Hopes & Dreams debrief

    • **JUNE 8?

      • SLT Election Day + Picnic

  • Hopes & Dreams

    • Currently there are 4 working committees

      • CEP stated having 4 meetings, but it was too much. Would like to reduce to 3

        • 2 of those meetings will be about coming together to work towards goals

      • Thinking about a meeting AFTER the Fall Fair

        • 1st Meeting- Nov. 10th? To discuss how we are moving towards goals set back in May

        • Can promote this Hopes & Dreams meeting to parents at the Fall Fair

        • 2nd Meeting- March 16th

      • SLT members should be represented in each group

        • Liz will share documentation for each group

        • We should be thinking about which group to join

  • CEP Goal Discussion (Revised CEP DUE OCT. 2nd)

    • I-plan portal

      • People can comment on goals (by being given access by Naomi)

      • As deadline is next Monday , Naomi doesnt think it is teasible to add people to iPlan to make commenting accessible before the October 2nd deadline but moving forward  we should do it.

      • Liz is suggesting to consider it as a tool to be used for next year

    • Goal 1: Math Lesson Study participation via Math Collective

      • We all agreed that this was a realistic goal, fine as written

      • In addition to this work, we have math leaders (Rajihah and Billy) now because Kate (former Math Coach) retired

      • Shift is back to having CPE2 lead math professional development

      • What about the middle school?

        • They use a different curriculum

        • Matt is a solid math lead

      • Math Collective- doing study groups where any teacher can join

      • What about workshops for parents?

        • Pretty sure CEP states it somewhere

        • Seems to be a need for this in 3 umbrella groups: early childhood, upper elementary grades, middle school

          • Teachers might be ready to lead these

        • Theresa will write action list for Math Workshop

          • We want to find out what workshops parents are interested in

          • Will require outreach

          • Working group can figure out how to execute this idea

        • Big idea we want to share with parents is the GROWTH MINDSET idea (that working on a challenging task is the point, this relates to how we problem solve in the real world–extending far beyond math concepts)

      • Something to consider: emphasis on showing work on math portion of state test

    • Goal 2: Emotionally/Socially Responsive Classroom

      • Use “curriculum” and send staff to various P.D.’s based in: Emotionally Responsive Practice (E.R.P.), Responsive Classroom, Restorative Justice Circles

      • How do we measure the success of this CEP goal from the children’s perspective (excluding the middle school, since they can developmentally give this kind of feedback)

      • Defining the “5%” improvement

        • For example, adding to the CEP something like “this is measured by data collected from the end of the year D.O.E. survey, etc.”

        • The issue from parents’ perspective: Teachers know how this is measured, but parents want to know how, want to be more in the know (“transparency”)

        • Perhaps another workshop around social/emotional work at CPE2?

        • Concern about how to include the middle school–who do the kids go to when they feel unsafe?

      • CEP goals are not clear enough for parents to read through the jargon

        • Use of more workshops and video-ing (essentially, different modes of disseminating information to ALL)

    • Goal 3:

      • Edit: “Pre-K – 7” should say “Pre-K – 8”

      • Edit: Take out “cycles of study” but KEEP inter-visitation

      • Edit: Take out the entire parenthetical at the end of the CEP

    • Goal 4:

      • Edit: 75% to 95%

    • Goal 5:

      • Edit: 4 meetings to 3 meetings per year

  • More staff participation at Fall Fair- Can we get more staff participation at the fair. Parents feel that it sends a good message as it is a community event.
