welcome to Central Park East I'm Naomi and I'm the principal you notice that I said I'm Naomi not mrs. Smith call T Rec Center we are all a community of Learners and activist for learn how to make our world our community and our school better we have students from 3 years old to 8th grade we do marcantonio school building is named after and you will also notice our latest addition which Oggy peels from The People's Church WM Lord's transformed into a place for the HTP to We believe that children learn by playing and doing things we're happy we have a campus with 3-yard where our children to run Explorer grow Play and Learn I'm glad you got here School library School library she's one of the best parts in 52 we have loads of books organized and a great Library could you send the certified librarian but has a regular weekly classes with all students in grades 1 through 8 I say anything to the parents yeah I love having your children in the library's first week to check out play Twerk it is a creativity and when you walk into a classroom where there's no play The Invention the stairs as well as lots of research that shows that depriving children of play is really stunting there so the question is not aren't you taking away from learning by letting them play I think the question is aren't you presenting their development by not allowing them to play you learn so much about how to navigate life without navigating me if you can if you're ready for work at least two choices do you want to work in today but we're going to pick more than one choice where do you want to work today choice what to write but the choice of what materials do you wear to work me I have fourth time tomorrow let's see what am I going to do painting will be at tables to play remember water play and let me see what would be my first choice what would be my second choice planning for life working is materials expiration for children can use material softly and bring their own ideas they make their own choices it's open-ended from the very beginning with children to make decisions about where they want to work they're really thinking about a place where they're going to be engaged which right away once a child naturally where can I get to have the opportunity in the school every day where they can have these conversations with their peers and really develop language this is what they're going to be doing for the rest of their lives maybe a lesson that all of us can learn is that when we disagree with someone we still have to be respect what are the sign you have to share people that is one of the unique things the Messi is celebrated they have an idea trying to execute and it's not mine too soft for them to come out let's give you some feedback you have your props you have your setting what you need is you know what play Coronavirus what you got one more day to write a script for my flight we don't have a whole lot of pieces the kids build really elaborate structures we're talking a lot about geometry we're talking a lot about balance describe the shape and that's geometry and math happening in directly through their play as adults we sort of develop into perfectionist in our own way and children have this sense of Na looking at the end product which is going with the flow that is really big teeth to me that I would want them to walk away with started either bakery or restaurant and they took a class list which we always have access to enough papertrey so you could decide if you wanted sprinkles and they start to make Jordan Matthews happening there they're doing a lot of counting figuring out who's going to make how many of this type of who's making the other there's a lot of teamwork that goes into it for them to explore and bring to the water table Tyler was really grappling with and thinking about thinking and even quite have a language for any first thought of it about pouring water on switch explain with different tribes and then together the two of them engaged in different talks about what was happening it's a very committed to having young people feel the excitement of what learning is I would hope that every feel so brave to try new things and to not be afraid to fail that they could carry that on with them throughout their lives and that opportunity to be in school and be able to lose your mind and then asked about the possibility to work with a friend or two friends and listen to each other and create together it's just amazing we don't have much of that and if you start out in the early grades imagine the possibilities
